31st & Main

31st & Main So I’m driving home from work yesterday, at this large busy intersection that I pass through, and standing at the bus stop on the sidewalk is this long haired blond chick in a green jacket who catches my eye. She’s dancing. . . Well, high stepping and shuffling really, she had music in her ears, and she was energetically dancing and singing out loud to the world. Yep. She was watching for the bus to come over the hill, and dancing like there was nobody watching. . . Actually there were 20 lanes of traffic watching (It doesn’t seem like that many, but count them some time!) plus some tall young guy, behind her, that started shuffle-dancing with her. He had a big grin on his face, so I don’t know if he was mocking her behind her back or he just started enjoying life too. Now you might say, “No big deal. That happens all the time.” - Oh no, it doesn’t. Not here. I figured up that I have driven through that intersection now at least 7200 times, and I have never seen that before, there, or at any of the bus stops on my way to work. . . That would raise the odds of such an occurrence to only 1 in over 100,000. It does not happen all the time. At least not that I’ve seen. Usually people waiting at bus stops here are like zombies. They are sullen, quiet, appear downcast, on hold, and have a blank empty look or they appear slightly annoyed. That’s my drive to work and back. I see dozens and dozens of these faces every business day. So I was impressed. You might have laughed or felt embarrassed for the girl, but I said to myself; THAT is my kinda girl! Independent, creative, unconventional, enjoying life, and singing to the world. Sure, she might be certifiably crazy, but does it get any better than that? I thought seriously about stopping and turning around to offer her a ride, but she was going the opposite direction, and well, it would be a shame to interrupt her, because it was a very beautiful and inspiring event. But admire her I will.
