DOWN but NOT out
I rode the creaky miners’ cage down the dark shaft by a hoist cable, until the darkness suddenly ended and I was 1000ft underground and staring into the lighted drift cavern of an old gold mine, in Cripple Creek, Colorado. My guide was an good-natured old man who was an experienced and retired miner himself. He spent most of the the 1970's, he said, in the humid ninety-degree heat, three thousand foot underground, in the nearby Ajax gold mine.

See, when I was growing up, President Harry S Truman attended the same church we attended. He always sat in the very back row, in the hard wooden chairs, so as to not disturb the service in any way. . . He was just a member of the community. I never remember a single time that he was recognized and hailed from the pulpit or where his presence ever caused a stir. My parents said Truman specifically asked to never be recognized or hailed like that. So, people just whispered to each other;

You realize, THIS is how we humans gather now - in the ether of the internet - by streaming electrons that run through insulated metal wires and pulses of light through fiber optic cables, that appear as digitized images, on screens of different sizes, that serve to CONNECT us now.
